It's that time of year for getting dirty. I'm out in the garden everyday breaking new ground, digging up weeds, planting seeds, prepping beds. And closer to the house, piles of dirt are everywhere as we dig trenches for water lines. We're going to have running water here!!!!! 😁Like, the kind where you turn on a tap and water comes out. Say whaaaaa???!!!!
🎶Take my little hoe, dig a hole in the ground
Can you see the forest for the trees?
A bushel of fresh, tender dandelion greens. A couple cloves of garlic, a couple good glugs of olive oil, a nice big pinch of salt, a few heaping spoons of nutritional yeast. Blend it. Boom!
Cottonwood. One of my all time favourite gifts of spring. A full immersion, meditative ritual of connecting to the earth, the birdsong, the green blush, the emergence of new life. Picking soft buds, fingers getting deliciously sticky. Old friends, new energy, nostalgia and hope. Once in a while a windstorm will fall a lofty giant, bringing an abundance of medicine into reach. And in the fallen canopy on the forest floor, there they are. Each resinous and exquisitely aromatic bud is full of antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal healing potency.
We just had the best conversation with my dad about childhood marble culture; drakes, cat’s eyes, bird cages, gassies, foggies, galaxies, creamies, stealies, cobs and king cobs... You remember? And marble season, as dead as it may be by now, is upon us! As soon as the snow melts on the south side of the school, it’s time to fill your pockets with marbles and go try your luck. Apparently my dad was good. He acquired hundreds each season. His unforgotten rival, the best marble shooter he ever knew, was Vernon Magunas. 😂😂 I, of course, saved all of my marbles from my childhood, and the value of these treasures is... mmm.. priceless.
