Wild Bergamot

Writer's picture: Rachel BoultRachel Boult

Wild Bergamot. Wild, yes. Bergamot as in Earl Grey Tea, no. That is a citrus fruit. This is a flowering plant in the mint family. Pungent, spicy, like wild mint and oregano, she vigorous in growth and her scent gives away her strong medicinal powers.

Forever abuzz with bees, a slight breeze can carry her spicy fragrance across the whole garden. Wild Bergamot is a wonderful aid in the treatment of fevers, colds, and flus. The strong aromatics make this herb a great choice for steam inhalations to clear respiratory congestion and sore throats. It’s a little like eucalyptus in that way, but taken internally t is also a good remedy for indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea, nausea and intestinal viruses.

Wild Bergamot has strong anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory actions, and is a perfect herb to work with at the onset and duration of a cold or upper respiratory infection. As a tea or tincture, it can have an effect on the nervous system and can help with tension headaches, anxiety and depression. It can be applied as a salve for wounds, bruises, swelling, rashes and burns. The fresh leaves and flowers are edible and make lovely pestos and zesty additions to salads.

And I didn’t mention this yet but the flowers. They are so weird, so exotic, that sometimes one grows a stem right up through another, and they are these fragrant purple beehivey geodesic domes with so much golden ratio magic I just can’t even begin to describe how cool they really are.
