Last summer I fell in love - like over the moon, weak in the knees, stars in my eyes, butterflies. That kind of love… for Anise Hyssop, or sometimes….as I like to call it when I am feeling over the top romantic….Agastache. And when I am just in that no nonsense headspace; Licorice Mint. And that perfectly describes her character and flavour.The surprising sweetness of her leaves, the tender texture and the rush of endorphins, and the inevitable swooning when you take a nibble out in the garden. Now I’m being a little silly, yes, but this is an excellent herb to grow in any garden. Anise Hyssop perennial in the mint family, and produces striking purple blooms her popularity with the bees is to be admired. It’s so great to have beautiful bee plants in the garden, and although it took her a while to get comfortable in my garden, I kept planting seeds and nursing seedlings, and tending the patch until now she’s right at home and spreading her seeds all around. She never feels invasive, she always feels important and welcome. She always has a special place in my heart, and in my garden. Fresh or dried, Anise Hyssop in wonderful teas, as her sweetness can help to help mask unpleasant or more bitter herbs. She lends well to an after dinner aperitif tea blend, sweet dreams kind of tea, or in a respiratory infection soothing kind of tea.
