My helper, getting a little squeamish about the worms. I have no idea where he gets this from, certainly not me! He is interested, but won’t touch the “wiggly wiggly” worms that turn up as I pull out turf day after day, expanding the veggie bed. It’s looking good! He picked rotten rose hips and gathered them in a basket, he bent down and kissed a spruce cone, he dropped catkins in the river and waved and said “bye!”, he pointed out the moss (a word he knows!), he stomped in the mud, and splashed the rivers edge with a nice and sandy stick. I have been falling asleep mentally preparing for this monumental garden task since the fall. I have been waiting for the ground to warm up, the rain to stop, and getting home from our insanely timed vacation to get right down and dirty. ⁣ ⁣We’ve been in post-travel isolation for 8 days already, and every day I’ve worked on this: I am pulling up the turf under the fence line, and expanding the veggie bed out beyond the garden by 3 feet. Also, I will pull up the turf between the two rows inside the fence to make one big veggie patch, 1000 sq ft!! Woah baby! That might be enough to feed us for a year! On the other side of the tractor, you can’t see it, but I’ve tilled up and planted a new row for raspberries too. ⁣ ⁣.⁣ ⁣The green tool there in the middle of the photo marks my progress. It’s a broad fork, and the best tool for this job. Lots of physical force, but I can jump on it, push the tines deep, and pull back on the handles to lift nice big wads of turf. I waaaaaay prefer this work than what I’ve done before, using the tiller on the tractor. That just rips up the turf and roots into small chucks and then I have to dig around for all of the clods and wads and it’s tedious, and you never get it all. This feels much more thorough and satisfying. I love the dirt. This is magnificently rich and fertile soil and I just love to fluff it up, and say hello to worms, and yank weeds, and sort out my headspace and my heartspace and be so grateful for this lifestyle and this land especially during this crazy time in the world.
